Hotmail

This isn’t a very technical question, but here it goes anyway...For several years now I’ve been using Hotmail for my email account. So today I go to check my mail and, much to my surprise, they’ve updated everything. Well you know what that means for us screenreader users, nothing works like it used to. I’m tired of messing around with Hotmail, and I’m not really looking forward to opening up a bunch of new email accounts looking for one that works well with an older version of JAWS. If anyone can suggest a site for emails for a decrepit version of JAWS and a decrepit JAWS user, I sure would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Glenn

Depends on the version of Jaws. Hotmail can be set up so that it works as it did before. Look for the setting that says something about the older style, It should be on the main page. You click that and Hotmail will work like you are use to with a few changes, but nothing difficult to learn.

I've used GMail now for 3 years, I had to choose the "basic settings" or "html settings" as my preferred interface. Many sighted people do this too, because the standard interface is too clutterred.
Once that is up I love the GMail service.
To get to your first message in your inbox you use x and Jaws jumps to the first check box, to delete messages you check the messages and then use the b button ttwice to jump to "delete" and they are gone (into the deleted items folder, not for good).
Spam filter is very good and the best thing is the Google search within your messages.
I can find any message from the last 3 years, usuallyin a matter of seconds by searching for the approprite keyword or sener.
GMail has an address book so altc for compose, enter, then type in the "to" field and hit enter after a few characters, or hit tab, and you have the matching name, if it is in your address book.
I also use it via pop3, Thunderbird sets up automatically with it once you give it your user and pass.
If your existing email client works for you, all the better, but if you are dead bent on switching, I can only recommend GMail.
Cheers

I personally used GMail before I got my own mail server, but what you can also do is set hotmail up to use pop.
That way you can just get your mail through which ever client you want.

Thanks for the replies, and sorry it’s taken so long for me to respond. Like I said, the JAWS I’m using isn’t the only thing getting old and decrepit.

Speaking of JAWS, I’m using version 7, and I guess it’s time to update it. I tried all the different settings on Hotmail, and I can’t reset it to the way it used to be. If there is a way, I haven’t come across it yet.

As for GMail, I haven’t tried it yet, but I think I will look into it. Thanks for the info.
